Yemen was known to the Romans as “Arabia Felix” – "Fortunate Arabia", because of its fertile terraced fields and temperate climate. The capital, Sana’a, is arguably the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. It is certainly one of world’s the most spectacular cities: its multi-storey mud-brick houses boast beautiful stained glass windows and the central Mosque dates back to the earliest days of Islam. The old city caravanserais have been centers of trade and communication for over 1000 years and still host traders in spices, dried fruits, silver and fabrics; the “suq” rivals those of Damascus, Cairo and Aleppo, with craftsmen, traders and merchants working much as they have for centuries. Sana’a is a UNESCO World Heritage city.
The Yemen College of Middle Eastern Studies (YCMES) was founded in 2006, as an extension of the highly successful Yemen Language Center, which has earned an international reputation for its outstanding programs.
- YCMES offers the Program in Contemporary Middle Eastern Studies: university-level courses on Middle Eastern studies that include contemporary history, Islamic studies, political, geographic and economic studies, as well as cultural, literary and arts programs. The College has excellent facilities, including high-speed internet, well-stocked library and comfortable residential rooms. The campus is situated in an historic part of Sana'a, and maintains an enviable student to faculty ratio. Courses take place in 15-week Fall and Spring semesters and a10-week Summer program. Courses are taught in English, though many students enhance their experience by enrolling in the excellent Arabic language programs at the Yemen Language Center.
- The Yemen Language Center (YLC) was the first private institution in Yemen dedicated exclusively to teaching Arabic as a foreign language. The YLC has served the needs of international students, researchers, and the resident expatriate community since 1989 and is open to students of all ability levels, with program lengths from five weeks to one year. The program costs cover instruction, texts and additional Arabic language learning materials, visa extension services, transportation from Sana'a International Airport, cultural and historical day trips outside Sana'a, round-trip airfare from New York, internet usage, meals, housing and lectures on Arab history and culture. These additional activities serve to dramatically enhance the Arabic language learning experience.
